This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
