The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
