New research indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
