Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that contained little new information.
