At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
